Fundación Calicanto aims to improve the quality of life for people in the historic Casco Antiguo communities of Panama City, where young people often live in poverty and are at risk of serious gang violence.
The organisation uses performing arts, including modern dance, as forms of therapy and behaviour change. It also provides educational and psychosocial support, recreational activities for children and training for their primary caregivers.
The organisation plans to use the Global Rising Star award funding to develop a curriculum that encourages children's capacity for critical thinking skills, which are linked to better academic performance.
It will also invest in staff training to provide guidance in how to balance complex learning needs, different ages and different levels of knowledge all in one classroom.
